Running the updater is simple. If you have only one copy of BulkRate on your hard drive, double-click the updater, and it and BulkRate will launch. Otherwise, use "drag and drop" if you are using System 7 (drag the Updater icon onto the BulkRate 1.7 or 1.7.1 icon and let go), or select both BulkRate 1.7 or 1.7.1 and the Updater and Type Command-O if you're using System 6.
What does the updater do?
It makes changes in your copy of BulkRate 1.7 or 1.7.1 to update it to version 1.7.2. For this reason, it's probably a good idea to turn off virus protection software, since they may object to the updater's activities.
What are the changes in BulkRate 1.7.1 and 1.7.2?
BulkRate 1.7.1:
• A new "Append archive to..." item in the File menu allows you to add archived messages to the end of an already existing archive. If you select just the messages you want to archive in the Message list window, then choose "Append archive to...", you can keep an archive of just Star Trek messages over a period of days, for example. Thanks to Ralph Strauch for keeping on my case about this.
• Smarter "Archive mail..." menu: Instead of asking you if you want to archive Incoming or Outgoing mail, the Archive function assumes that you wish to archive Incoming mail UNLESS the Outgoing mail window is open and topmost.
• Saving the Address Book: if you wish, you can now save an archive of the address book - to send to other people or to protect yourself in case BulkRate dies on you. To save an Address Book archive, the Address Book must be the only window open. Then choose "Archive mail..." from the File menu. You asked for it, Bill Williams, you'd better use it!
• Faster Message list building and rebuilding. Message lists should now take about half the time to rebuild as previously. Still slow, but not as slow. Thanks to Harry Myhre for tipping me off to how to do this better.
• Changes in sorting by Date/Time and by 'Thread' - fixed a problem that caused gatewayed messages to be sorted inappropriately. It seems that the date and time given by FirstClass in the message list and that in the message itelf are not the same for gatewayed messages. I believe John Stansel first brought this to my attention.
•Bug fixes:
A rare bug that caused a strange error dialog that read "Expected boolean" when you attempted to "Cancel" or "Abort session" by clicking on the appropriate button.
A bug that caused the Message list "tag" for a message to be garbled if you received more that 400 messages in a single session.
BulkRate 1.7.2:
•BulkRate will now correctly retrieve mail from more than 99 conference aliases in the "BulkRateToRead" folder. Previously, it scanned only the first 99 conferences.
•Fixed a bug that occured if your modem returned "CONNECT" rather than "CONNECT xxxx," where xxxx = 1200, 2400, 9600, 19200. (The bug was a "Unmatched quote" error, a stupid oversight on my part.)
•Fixed a subtle bug that sometimes caused a "Can't find that card" error when trying to archive, delete, or read mulitple messages from the Message List window.
•Clicking in the resize box in BulkRate windows no longer causes the window to "creep".
•If you size a window very large, then move the copy of BulkRate to another machine with a smaller monitor, the window should now auto-resize to fit on the smaller screen.
